[Introduction] Greenery Arts
Founded in 1988 by music educator, Dr. Wai Tat Wong, Greenery Arts (originally under the name of Greenery Music) operates with the purpose of not only educating musicians and artists of all disciplines, but also with the focus of improving the quality of their characters through the development of physical, mental, and spiritual health, hoping to achieve "one person, one instrument, and one art,” in all artistic expressions. Core tenets of the school also promote cultural and ethnic harmony, and world peace. Today the school operates under three different departments: the Hong Kong Academy of Art, Artiste Star Dance School, and Greenery Music.
Located in Hong Kong, Greenery Arts enjoys the reputation of the city’s most famous art institution, also for their broad scale of music instruction (over 30 different instruments), teaching ages 3-18, but also many adults as well. International acclaim for both Dr. Wong and his school reverberates all throughout mainland China, also reaching distant shores in the United States, especially demonstrated with a newly opening school, located in American Fork, Utah. The school also teaches Mandarin Chinese, since Hong Kong’s return to Chinese rule has motivated broad interest in learning the primary language spoken in China’s mainland.
Greenery’s main head office covers 20,000 feet, also offering 33 branches throughout Hong Kong, with uniquely qualified professors, teaching a wide variety of Chinese and Western musical instruments, art, painting, western dance, drama, language, and other relevant courses. They also are one of Hong Kong’s major sellers of Chinese and western instruments like (but not limited to) pianos, violins, guitars, plus, music accessories and books; also selling paint, pencils, art pads, and other art supplies; plus, a full range of dancewear, shoes, and dance accessories, ensuring that each student receives not only the support they need for success, but the tools as well.
From the very foundation, the school’s commitment to excellence has produced consistently high results through the combination of both personal training and academic instruction in all areas of Arts education, tailoring their management and teaching efforts according to the needs of each specific school; thus, best organizing the curriculum for learning the musical instruments, dance, art, drama, etc. The focus of the company primarily rests in four areas: teaching well structured classes, organizing and participating in competitions, hosting tests, and performing.
For the last 20 years, they have toured over 300 primary and secondary schools, offering free demonstrations and performances to cultivate interest in music and other Arts among the students. To date, over 200,000 students have learned their art through Greenery Arts, many pursuing it professionally or making it a life-long pursuit.
[Management] Professional Quality Education
The enduring successes of the Greenery academy rise from their strong core of teachers, each coming from the elite in all disciplines: drama, art, dance, music, etc., who must pass a rigorous selection process before being accepted to the school’s faculty, thus, only those possessing gifted abilities and a true enthusiasm for teaching make the grade. The school also seeks input from Arts professionals from around the world, further strengthening the school and their teaching team.
In addition, Greenery asks that the teachers always seek ways to improve their students’ interest, addressing the students' basic skills, but also encouraging that they exhibit care, concern, carefulness, attentiveness, dedication, and a sense of responsibility towards each student. Rich artistic skills and experience remain integral factors for mastering the art of good quality teaching, as well as demanding punctuality, and morality of character among the students, but then tempering the stringent requirements through both academic and peer praise. Instructors also plan regular rehearsals, along with providing other teaching opportunities such as research activities, mentoring, and conducting talent exchanges.
Finally, in Greenery’s commitment to excellence, they conduct regular teacher performance reviews, which further encourage continuous self-improvement, honing of craft, and improved teaching ability; also mandating the presentation of a strong professional introduction for students, thus, ensuring the growth of the school and advancing its goals.
Sound scientific management, and a service-oriented attitude, credits Greenery’s twenty years of growing successes. Further success comes from strengthening the "quality education" concept through the implementation of a multilevel form of management, regular observational activities, teaching evaluation, productive testing results, performance competitions, and a series of initiatives to encourage high grading scores, which aims to improve the management/merit-based style of teaching.
Greenery encourages that parents maintain close contact and communication with the school, allowing them to gauge the pulse of trends in the teachers’ methods, and also in reviewing the students’ progress. With this feedback of dual communication, both the parent’s and the school’s expectations are clearly understood, with further follow-up when warranted, which creates greater ease between home and the school. Another factor in Greenery’s success comes from the hard work and support offered in their pre and post-sales maintenance services for all musical instruments and materials. Specifications and administration for any repair or servicing is both standardized and systematic, giving the assurance of Greenery as a reliably long-term partner.
[Grading, Competitions, Performances]
1) Greenery encourages students to take part in multiple performances and competitions, which broadens their horizons. For decades they have led countless students to participate in different competitions, dance performances, concerts, and exhibitions; also taking part in the Royal school of Music, the Dance Academy, the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, Central Conservatory of Music, Trinity College of Music, the UK and China Academy of Fine Arts, which set level examinations upon participation completion. All such activities granted students throughout the years reception of excellence and outstanding student awards too numerous to cite. In addition, Greenery also has a scholarship program to encourage outstanding students to study hard, and further their skills in all arts and disciplines.
Greenery also promotes hundreds of students every year to perform in large-scale concerts and some smaller concerts, such as an interschool Arts and Crafts Show, the Zheng Situation, the Chinese culture in Hong Kong Arts Festival, and the International Music and Art Competition, giving students and teachers more opportunities to communicate, share their talents, and to increase their level of learning in applied settings.
2) The International Diploma Exam & Assessment Association is an organization of Greenery Arts, and it is their honor to be the agency used by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music for their International Examination Board practical examination and grading tests, which examination board is also a department within the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. In 1994, Dr. Wai Tat Wong and his daughter Ms Michelle Wong together contacted the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, and advocated that they set up an organization, which holds the examination of both Chinese and Western Music grading and testing. Approval was successfully obtained in 1995 from the Ministry of Culture of the People's Republic of China, and Greenery’s services were adopted. Working through the Xinhua News Agency’s (HK) Culture and Sports Department, the testing operates in Hong Kong, allowing the development of practical music to flourish, and forever changing the development of Chinese music history in both Hong Kong and China.
Currently, three dozen examinations are offered, with projects divided into 10 sections. Subjects included in the Chinese Music Section: guzheng, erhu, flute, lute, dulcimer, liuqin, nguyen, sheng, suona, gourd wire, bau. Western Music Section: piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, classical guitar, harmonica, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone , trumpet, trombone, french horn, tenor number, small tuba, tuba, accordion, percussion. Other: children vocal, ethnic vocal, popular vocal, bel canto vocal, and music theory.
Examiners from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music rigorously assess candidates during testing, then admitting exceptional candidates into their organization. They look especially for demonstrations of excellence in both the recruitments and the teachers of all qualified candidates. Throughout the years many of Greenery’s students have, thus, embarked on professional stage careers, as a direct result from the aforementioned examinations. Some specific examples of students that have gone on to study with other notable organizations include: a flutist gaining admittance to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music; a guzheng performer, flutist, and violinist joining the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts; another guzheng player attending the Chinese University of Hong Kong; then different pianists studying at Brigham Young and Julliard Universities in the United States, and the British Royal school of Music; with other countries also including Australia and Japan; and all such students obtaining both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, through which they went on to mentor and nurture a new generation of artistic talents.
3) In 2006 Greenery jointly organized with the Hong Kong and China a Hong Kong/Chinese Culture Arts Festival, including performances, exhibitions, international music, cultural activities, and Arts competitions, etc., but also encouraging participation from around the world. These activities are currently supported by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department of HKSAR (Hong Kong Special Administrative Region), and the Conservatory of Music both in mainland China and other Asian Countries. Furthermore, most of the musicians, artists, and cultural professors fully encourage their student to participate in the activities. The Arts festival aims to promote the Chinese culture, representing thousands of years of fine Arts, and also increasing knowledge and favorable perception both at home and abroad. Entering its fourth year, the festival will incorporate more than a dozen different types of cultural activities including: dance, music, reading, etc., with the goal of inspiring the young to join the artistic elite, and shining a bright light for them to emulate. We will also invite a number of internationally renowned artists as guest performers, judges, and art consultants, and will continue to hold an annual International Music Art Competition.
[Promoting Cultural Exchange]
In 2008, Greenery and the Chinese Culture and Arts Festival in Hong Kong have jointly organized a cultural exchange program, setting up the "International Cultural Exchange Travel Co., Ltd." to further promote Arts exchanges between Hong Kong and Taiwan. Students with good academic results are regularly invited to participate in the exchange, including groups and performing Arts activities. The current exchange activities have also been extended all throughout Southeast Asia.
Every year, during the annual Hong Kong Schools Music Festival, Greenery students consistently place in the top three, demonstrating their leadership in inter-school competitions. Relevant primary and secondary schools also hold annually a "Joint School Arts and Crafts Show," offering students a platform to display their talents, through which Greenery’s landscape of rich talents shines beautifully. It is worth mentioning that Greenery's founder, Dr. Wai Tat Wong, has tirelessly shown his dedication and love of the Arts in his support for such causes, enthusiastically join the Arts and cultural development. His consistently outstanding contributions to the community's Arts programs have garnered him many recognitions and awards. In the year 2007, his accomplishments and contributions were recognized by Armstrong University with them granting him the “World Outstanding Chinese Award,” also presenting him with an Honorary Doctor of Science degree. All such accomplishments and undying dedication offer great confidence that Dr. Wong will elevate Greenery to ever increasing levels of prestige and future successes.
Trees reach perfection in only ten years; an artist requires a lifetime.
Not only has Greenery grown strong over the years, but countless artists from all disciplines also flourish, however, our success is inseparable from our combined efforts, and we could not have achieved such greatness without schools, parents, students, and community support. In the future, we will continue to provide quality Arts education, and a comprehensive range of services, with even more efforts to promote and popularize the art of nurturing latent talents, so that batch after batch of outstanding students will continually take their dreams to the stage, achieving all goals and aspirations.
